Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Posted on Feb 21, 2013 in Hospital News | 13 commentsA little story about how things get done. In Somaliland. And on the Internet.
At Edna Hospital, we have been facing a problem of having too many newborn babies with breathing difficulties and those who are premature. As many as six infants occupy our our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at one time, but we have only one incubator, which is both unsafe for the babies and un-professional but we had no alternative.
We are fully aware that making premature babies share an incubator is dangerous but had no other option when we have become the only hope for the survival of these small babies in Hargeisa…

Love to read good news!!!
have posted there before and have not gotten a reply. am a maternity nurse in the US, very interested in solutions for low resource places. have asked before if kangaroo mothercare is practices at your hospital, yet no reply.
A suggestion: I think people like to donate towards a specific needed item (like the incubator). Perhaps you could list a range of needed items along with their cost (oxygen container $750, oxygen mask $100, etc) and people could choose how their donations are applied. Seeing that one incubator costs $10,000 may scare away the more modest donors who have $50 to give, but if they knew their $50 would cover half the cost of an oxygen mask, well then, it personalizes the investment. You can imagine “your” oxygen mask helping that premie in the picture — and countless others. Just a thought.
Another idea: I asked Nicholas Kristoff to retweet an announcement about this on Twitter, but no go. I’m sure he has to sift through a zillion tweets every day, but that’s my point: on FB, his post gets 496 “likes.” On Twitter, he has 1.2 million followers. You do the Math!

@judith lienhard . I worked at Edna Adan Hospital in November and December last year. Kangaroo care is practiced and strongly encouraged at the hospital. There are still times when a baby or a mother is too unwell for this excellent care method and at these time it is the incubator, and brilliant caring staff and students that provide the warmth and care.
