The book, Half the Sky, by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn is now a featured exhibit at The Skirball Center in Los Angeles. In November, 2011, Edna was very pleased to have an opportunity to visit there where she was greeted by the curators and by visitors.
Edna admired the portion of the exhibit dedicated to the work of the Edna Hospital and spoke to the assembled audience about her work and about the difficulties faced by the women of Somaliland. At one point, she uses a thorn branch to describe the cruel process of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as it is practiced in East Africa.
PBS is producing a mini-series based on Half The Sky. For the segment about Edna Hospital, Nicholas visited Edna together with film star Diane Lane, and she and Edna have since become great friends, and their deep affection for one another is apparent in the photos seen below. They were both thrilled at the opportunity to meet up with one another again and, over lunch, they shared stories of their adventures together in Somaliland in circumstances that would ill-befit most celebrities.
This exhibit continues through March 11, 2012 in Los Angeles at The Skirball Center.
